Despite the presence of Jasprit Bumrah, former India opener Wasim Jaffer believes the Mumbai Indians’ (MI) bowling arsenal for IPL 2022 is quite weak. The concerning part, according to Jaffer, is that there is no quality on the bench as well.

Mumbai Indians, the five-time IPL winners, were defeated by the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) by five wickets in Pune on Wednesday. Mumbai had a slim chance of winning after reducing KKR to 83 for 4 while defending a total of 161. Pat Cummins, on the other hand, smashed an undefeated 56 off 15, exposing Mumbai’s bowling assault.
After Mumbai’s defeat to Kolkata, Jaffer stated that the franchise’s bowling prospects are bleak. During a chat on ESPNCricinfo, he expressed his thoughts as follows:
“Despite Bumrah, this is a very weak MI bowling attack.” Only Jaydev Unadkat is expected to enter. They don’t have any quality on the bench, whether it’s in the pace or spin departments.”
Chris Lynn, an Australian batter, added his two cents, claiming that Mumbai may be regretting their decision to pick Jofra Archer at the auction despite knowing he wouldn’t be available this season. He explained:
“It’s fascinating that you’re paying for a man who isn’t present. You must be present in the now and not consider what the team will require in a year’s time. You have no influence over what occurs. Next year, Archer could be hurt again.”
Mumbai’s bowlers took a beating from Cummins. Sams finished with 1 for 50 from three overs, while Tymal Mills went for 38 from three overs despite taking two wickets.
“Rohit isn’t in the best of shape.” – MI skipper Wasim Jaffer (MI Bowling Attack)
Apart from their bowling, Mumbai captain Rohit Sharma’s batting form is also concerning. He needed 12 balls to make three runs against KKR, and he eventually top-edged an attempted pull from Umesh Yadav.
The Mumbai administration, as well as the Indian selectors, will be concerned about Rohit’s form, according to Jaffer. He went on to say:
“Rohit appears to be in poor health. The beat isn’t there. The Indian selectors, not just in Mumbai, would be concerned that they are not seeing the best of Rohit.”
The veteran cricketer finished by suggesting that Mumbai captain Virat Kohli adjust his batting order:
“Rohit can probably bat third, and (Dewald) Brevis can open.” They just need to get off to a good start. They’ll need an extra 20 runs with their bowling.”
Rohit scored 41 against the Delhi Capitals (DC) and 10 against the Rajasthan Royals (RR) before being dismissed cheaply on Wednesday in Pune (RR).
