In Manchester United’s 1-1 draw with Atletico Madrid in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League Round of 16 encounters, Cristiano Ronaldo was unable to make an impression.

For the Red Devils, Ronaldo leads the line, with Bruno Fernandes, Jadon Sancho, and Marcus Rashford trailing behind him. Midfielders Paul Pogba and Fred started, with Lindelof starting ahead of Aaron Wan Bissaka at right back.

Atletico Madrid appeared to be the superior team at the outset of the game, with Gimenez having an opportunity to put Diego Simeone’s side ahead in the third minute. Four minutes later, however, Joao Felix broke the deadlock by glancing Renan Lodi’s cross into the back of the net off the post.

For the rest of the half, the two teams failed to create chances, with Sime Vrsjalko’s header bouncing against the crossbar in the 45th minute. At the halftime break, Atletico Madrid appeared to be in control of the game.

The second half began similarly to the first, with the Spanish team dominating the play. Neither team, though, could create any serious chances until the last minutes of the game.

In the 80th minute, Bruno Fernandes released Anthony Elanga with a through-the-pass, leaving the teenager one-on-one with Jan Oblak in goal. Manchester United’s striker calmly placed the ball past the goalie to tie the game at 1-1.

Both teams were looking for a winner, with Antoine Griezmann’s attempt hitting the crossbar before Cristiano Ronaldo’s effort being saved by Oblak with the game’s last action.

The two sides will meet in the second leg on March 16th at Old Trafford, with Manchester United more satisfied with the result on the night.

On the night, Atletico Madrid did a good job of neutralizing Cristiano Ronaldo’s threat. Throughout the game, the Portuguese superstar only managed two shots. Diego Simeone will be pleased with his defenders’ efforts to contain the striker.

On the other side, Rangnick will be concerned by Ronaldo’s current form. This season, the 37-year-old has only scored once in his last nine outings for Manchester United in all competitions.

The Red Devils will play Watford in the Premier League this weekend in a game that Rangnick’s team must win.
