Badminton

In this article, we will be sharing about what eas the original name of badminton. So do read and enjoy the full article.

Badminton, the sport we all know and love, gets its name from a house called the Badminton House, which was named after a place in Gloucestershire, England called Badminton.

Oh, you didn’t realize that? Then you should probably learn about the history of the sport. But did you know that badminton was not always known by its current moniker in its early days? Let’s take a closer look at the origins of sports.

Badminton’s original name is Poona, after a city in India with the same name where it was popular among British military officials. Poona’s name and regulations were first documented in 1873.

Although it has its origins in Poona, it is not the same sport because Poona uses a ball rather than a shuttlecock and is now known as ball badminton. It is a hybrid of Poona and another ancient sport known as battledore and shuttlecock. As a result, it’s possible to argue that Poona, battledore, and shuttlecock, or the sport itself, are the original terms.

It’s worth noting, tho, that in the nineteenth century, badminton was known by many names in different parts of the world. During this time, some people in western India called badminton “tomfool” rather than “Poona.”

Tomfool was inspired by a local Indian game called tam, as well as the word “phul,” which means flower, which describes the shape and looks of a shuttlecock.

Poona?

Badminton

Ball badminton is currently known as Poona, Poonah, or Poonai, and was named after the same-named city in India (which is now called Pune). Poona is played with a wool ball that weighs between 27 and 30 grams (1.0 to 1.1 oz) and has a diameter of 5 to 5.5 cm, unlike badminton (2.0 to 2.2 in).

It is a 5 versus 5 game that is played outside. Each team has ten players, although only five of them are active at any given time throughout the game. Players use the same rackets as in badminton, and the court has boundary lines and a net.

A ball and the game’s court are 12 meters (39.4 feet) wide by 24 meters (78.7 feet) long. With a 288 meter2 surface area (3100 feet2). A badminton court, on the other hand, measures 6.1 meters (20 feet) wide by 13.4 meters (44 feet) long. With an area of 81.7 meters2 (880 feet2). Ball badminton’s court is 3.5 times the size of a badminton court!

In Poona, games are played in a best-of-three format. The team that scores the 34th point first wins the game. When either team reaches 9, 18, or 27 points. Players on both teams switch positions, similar to what happens in volleyball. Players rotate serving between the left and right courts in Poona. Similar to the way they do in this sport and must serve underarm and below the waist.

More detail:

While Poona, or ball badminton in current times, is not as famous as badminton, it played an important role in the development of the sport concepts. Poona is where the concept of a net, borders. And even being competitive (rather than cooperative, as in battledore and shuttlecock) originated. Ball badminton competitions are still held in the twenty-first century. And the sport is primarily popular in India.

What is the difference between Poona, Battledore, Shuttlecock, and Badminton?

While badminton has roots in Poona, battledore, and shuttlecock, there are significant differences between the two sports. Starting with Poona, we can see that it employs a ball rather than a shuttlecock and can be. Played competitively outdoors rather than only indoors in competitive badminton. Furthermore, the Poona court is much larger, with five players on each side of the court. Whereas this sport only allows two players on each side of the court.

Battledore and shuttlecock are similar to badminton in that they are played with a shuttlecock, but they are not competitive sports. Players are assigned to a single squad and are tasked with extending a rally as long as feasible.

This may have been difficult when rackets and shuttlecocks were first introduced, but that is no longer the case nowadays. It is, like battledore and shuttlecock, has no established borders and can accommodate up to 8 players at a time. Whereas it does have set boundaries and can accommodate up to 4 players at a time.
